River Landing Debuts Course Upgrade

Already ranked as one of the best courses to play in eastern North Carolina, River Landing has taken its River Course to an even higher level with its installation of new Champion Ultra Dwarf greens. After just seven weeks, the River Course is now ready to re-open for play on Wednesday, August 18th.

Bent grass greens have been a part of River Landing since it was built 15 years ago, so Steve Sprouse, River Landing’s course superintendent recognized early on that the aging greens would eventually require a change. Sprouse planned for the course upgrade over the past couple years, researching grasses and determining the best timing for the transition.

“The new Champion grass will provide a consistent green speed and conditions year round,” said Sprouse. “This is going to allow us to maintain a uniform standard, not only during our cooler months, but also all summer long.”

Champion’s hybrid Bermuda grass has been around for several years now and has proven to be an outstanding surface, especially in a temperate zone like River Landing’s.

Other notable golf courses utilizing Champion Ultra Dwarf include Atlanta Athletic Club (GA) … Home of the 2011 PGA Tournament, Green Valley Country Club (AZ) and Hobe Sound Golf Course (FL).

“A course is only as good as its greens,” said River Landing Head Golf Professional, Larry George. “Thanks to our outstanding maintenance team, our members and guests will notice a much better putting surface, as well as an improved overall golf experience.”

General Manager, Rich Phaneuf, is pleased with the significant capital improvement that has been made. “At River Landing, we continually reinvest in the quality of our community,” said Phaneuf. “It’s what makes our community such an amazing place to live and play.”
