Teeing off from a toilet? Superintendent challenges golfers at River Hills

From teeing off while sitting on a toilet, to playing through fairway irrigation and other interesting putting challenges, there was no shortage of laughs, prizes and cheer for golfers at the River Hills Golf and Country Club in Clyde River on Sept. 22.

It was the first-ever Superintendent Revenge Scramble, cooked up by course manager Lesa Perry O’Connell and course superintendent Theressa Bower, with a little help from board member Jamie Campbell and friends.

“It was a hit,” says O’Connell. “All golfers commented about the amount of fun they had. Hoots, hollers, cheers and laughter could be heard all over the course all day long. It’s fun to organize events when they are appreciated and enjoyed by all.”

The course set up began the night before, with volunteers stringing up things like a net and clothesline, “anything we had to bring in,” said O’Connell.

Bower and her staff put the finishing touches on the obstacles and challenges that awaited golfers on 13 of the 18 holes on the course the next morning.

“Thank you to all the golfers that tried golf from the beach, off a mattress, through sheets, around a gorilla, over a net, wearing oven mitts, through sprinklers, and sitting on a toilet,” said O’Connell in a social media post. “Putting through toilet paper, tools, range balls, over-irrigation hoses, garden tools, greens under repair and impossible pin placements.”

O’Connell said River Hills plans to make the Superintendent Revenge Scramble an annual event.
