Tierra del Sol Golf Course Reopens Following 13-Month Sustainable Renovation in Partnership with GEO Foundation

Tierra del Sol Golf Course Aruba

Tierra del Sol Golf Course has officially reopened following a transformative 13-month renovation that positions the iconic Robert Trent Jones II–designed course as a global model for sustainable golf. The project was completed in partnership with the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, the Scotland-based non-profit recognized worldwide for advancing environmental and community stewardship in the game.

The ambitious renovation focused on reducing resource consumption, improving biodiversity, and enhancing long-term course playability, while simultaneously expanding wildlife habitats—particularly for Aruba’s beloved Shoco Owl, the island’s national bird.

A Greener Course for Generations to Come

“Tierra del Sol has always been about harmony—between golf, nature, and community,” said Ashiko Martinus, General Manager of Tierra del Sol Resort & Golf. “This renovation reflects that philosophy. We reduced water consumption, replaced the entire irrigation system for efficiency, introduced drought-tolerant turfgrasses, and restored natural habitats across the property. But the most rewarding result has been the 80 percent increase in Shoco Owl nesting sites.”

The Shoco Owl population has been under pressure due to habitat loss throughout Aruba. Tierra del Sol’s renovation not only preserved existing nesting zones but expanded them, solidifying the course’s role as a key conservation area on the island.

Sustainable Design Meets Global Standards

The renovation included complete bunker reshaping and reduction, 18-hole tee and green restoration, and installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system designed to optimize every drop of water used. The project marks the first renovation completed under GEO Foundation’s Sustainable Golf Renovations program, which provides certified roadmaps and best practices to guide environmentally responsible course construction.

“True sustainability integrates environmental, social, and economic priorities,” said Sam Thomas, Director of Developments at GEO Foundation. “At Tierra del Sol, every design and construction decision was measured against that standard—from preserving native dune landscapes to improving resource efficiency and biodiversity. The result is a golf course that performs beautifully while making a positive impact on its environment and community.”

Collaboration That Inspires

The renovation team included Greenball Golf Construction, Iberostar Aruba General Manager Araud Le Lanchon, Course Superintendent Jason Chennault, and GEO Development & Renovation Project Manager Tyler Annan, who worked closely with local organizations including the Aruba Conservation Foundation and Aruba Birdlife Conservation.

“Working with GEO allowed us to adopt a science-based approach to sustainability,” said Le Lanchon. “We’re proud to show that golf courses can coexist with—and even strengthen—the ecosystems around them. Our goal is to demonstrate that responsible environmental management enhances both the playing experience and the long-term vitality of the island.”

A Model for the Future of Golf

Tierra del Sol’s transformation underscores the golf industry’s growing commitment to responsible stewardship. Upon reopening, the resort has joined GEO’s OnCourse® platform, where continued certification will help track progress in water savings, habitat restoration, and community engagement.

“This partnership is more than a one-time project,” added Martinus. “It’s an ongoing commitment to operate responsibly, inspire our guests, and ensure that Tierra del Sol remains one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and sustainable golf destinations.”
