Calusa Country Club, part of the award-winning Lakewood Ranch master-planned community, will unveil a new 12-hole “social golf” course this winter, offering players a faster, more flexible playing experience without sacrificing variety or challenge.
Designed by Gordon Lewis, the course will contain a mix of par-3, par-4, and par-5 holes, giving golfers a full range of strategic and fun shotmaking within a shorter round. When played to its full potential, the layout will stretch to 4,895 yards with a total par of 48.
Noteworthy Features
- Mixed-par design: Includes holes varying in length and difficulty, e.g. a long par-5 (Hole 2), a short “cape” par-5, classic par-3s, and short, touchy par-4s.
- Strategic variety: Particular attention was given to hole design to challenge players of different skill levels. For example, Hole 8 features a deep green and a tee that is approximately 200 feet wide, allowing multiple angles of attack.
- “Social golf” concept: Aimed at making the game more accessible and fun for a wide audience — from time-pressed golfers to juniors and newcomers. The idea is to offer a shorter, more flexible round but with enough variety to keep experienced players engaged
Supporting Amenities
Calusa Country Club already boasts a robust set of golf amenities, including:
- Nearly one-acre putting course with adjacent snack bar, fire pit, and seating areas.
- Aqua driving range and dedicated short game practice area.
- Golf simulator housed in the clubhouse.
These facilities are designed to complement the new 12-hole course and support a range of players, whether they want full practice sessions, casual golf, or quick rounds.
Quotes
“The 12-hole course at Calusa has two of my favorite holes of all time. Number Two is a ‘cape’ hole, which means bite off what you dare on the drive … and then there is Number Eight – it’s a little cutie … golfers will have a different angle of attack every day they play.”
— Gordon Lewis, Course Designer
“We’re redefining what the golf experience can look like. The new 12-hole course caters to the growing demand for faster, more flexible play without compromising variety or challenge. It’s a forward-thinking design … while still delivering the strategic elements experienced golfers appreciate.”
— Matthew Koratich, Director of Community Management, Lennar Southwest Florida.
