About the Speaker: Dr. Jim Brosnan

Dr. Jim Brosnan is a Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and serves as Director of the UT Weed Diagnostics Center. He leads research, extension, and diagnostic initiatives that support Tennessee’s expansive $5.8 billion turfgrass industry University of Tennessee Knoxville.

With a career marked by more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific journal publications, Dr. Brosnan actively mentors graduate students and advances integrated strategies for managing turfgrass weeds—including those that have developed resistance to herbicides. His work spans turfgrass systems throughout golf courses, sports fields, sod production, and lawns, combining chemical and cultural control methods for sustainable outcomes.

Dr. Brosnan’s expertise has been widely recognized. He has received the Outstanding Researcher and Outstanding Educator Awards from the Northeastern Weed Science Society, the Outstanding Young Weed Scientist Award from the Southern Weed Science Society, the Young Crop Scientist Award from the Crop Science Society of America, and the Dr. William H. Daniel Award—the highest teaching honor accorded by the Sports Turf Managers Association.

He is deeply engaged with professional organizations, including the Weed Science Society of America, the Southern Weed Science Society, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Sports Turf Managers Association, and Turfgrass Producers International. He also advises the Tennessee Turfgrass Association Board of Directors. His expertise has been sought by PGA Tour venues—including major championship sites—and NFL franchises.

Networking and Education

The September meeting is designed to be both educational and social. Attendees will benefit from Dr. Brosnan’s expertise while enjoying an opportunity to network with colleagues in a relaxed setting.

To ensure adequate planning for lunch and golf, members are asked to register no later than Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
